The Public Works Department has two full-time people and one part-time person who do an excellent job for the Borough. Steve Stonier, Mike Mead, and Frank Gudman are out there, regardless of the weather, picking up refuse, leaves, brush, and recyclables, and snow plowing — doing whatever it takes to keep the town looking good — including maintaining all of the equipment, which is kept in good condition.
Leaves should be placed on the tree lawn/curbside areas for pick-up (not in the roadway, because rain events could cause the drains to clog and result in flooding). After Thanksgiving, leaves must be bagged for pick-up. DO NOT put tree limbs and shrubbery trimmings in the leaves because they will damage the leaf machine.
If you have prunings (not a whole tree and large branches), etc., to be picked up/mulched, please stack them neatly near the roadway (on the tree lawn/near the curb area, if possible) and the crew will remove them.
Sweeping is done Fridays in the spring/ summer months (weather permitting) try not to park on the street that day.
The Streets Department operates 2 dump trucks equipped with plows and salt spreaders. Salt and cinder is applied the designated snow routes, hills and school zones when the snow begins to stick to the roads. There are 7 miles of borough streets divided into two (2) zones. Penn Dot salts and plows all State Roads. Plowing begins when the snow reaches three (3″) inches in depth. If the snow accumulation is greater than six (6″) inches, the crews will continuously plow all snow routes to keep the streets open for emergency vehicles. A full-width plowing is done at the end of the storm to open all streets. During plowing operations, snow is pushed to the right side of the road blocking driveways and parked cars. Residents may wish to wait until the street plowing operations are complete before digging out driveways and parked cars. The Municipal Parking Lots are salted and/or plowed as soon as manpower is available. During winter weather emergency conditions (snow accumulation of two or more inches, existing snow/ice conditions which make driving particularly hazardous, or upon declaration by the Mayor), on-street parking is restricted as follows: (a) parking is prohibited on Snow Emergency Routes (SERs) — State Routes 6 and 29 and Borough streets that have signs designating them as SERs; and (b) parking is restricted to even numbered days (between the hours of Midnight and 8:00 AM) on the even numbered side of the street and odd numbered days on odd numbered side of the street. These restrictions are necessary to facilitate snow plowing/removal and to enable emergency personnel to get to incident locations quickly and safely Sidewalks are the responsibility of the property owner and must be cleared 12 hours after the snowstorm is over. It is illegal to throw snow from your sidewalk, driveway, or parked car into streets or alleys. If there is a fire hydrant in front of your property, please remove the snow around it. This will save time in case of an emergency.
