Tunkhannock, which is the County Seat of Wyoming County, is within the greater Scranton and Wilkes-Barre metropolitan areas, has population of 1911, and was incorporated in 1841.
The community's name is based on a Native American term, which has been variously translated as "meeting of the waters".
The Borough Office, Department of Public Works, and Police Station are located at 126 Warren Street. All Borough meetings are held at this location, in the Council Chambers.
An eight member Council governs the Borough, with the Mayor acting as a tiebreaker for voting purposes and also serving as the Superintendent of the Police Department.
